And Rust en Vrede Estate has a subscription to gold medals at the Veritas Awards. Jean Engelbrecht recently took over Rust en Vrede Estate from his father Jannie. Like Jannie, Jean had a life before viticulture. While the father was a South African rugby idol before acquiring the winery in 1978, the son spent years flying around the world as a jumbo pilot for South African Airways. However, the passion for wine is in both their blood. And so together they made Rust en Vrede what it is today: a winery acclaimed by wine critics from all over the world. Rust en Vrede received a very special honor in 1993, when a wine from their cellar was served on the international stage and in a highly official setting on the occasion of the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony to Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk.
