Prosecco is a protected designation for still, semi-sparkling and sparkling wines produced in Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Until 2009, Prosecco was the name of a white grape variety grown in Veneto, Italy, now called Glera. Since 2009, Prosecco has been subject to very strict regulations regarding the origin and processing of the grapes as well as bottling. Prosecco may only be filled in white, yellow, brown, green and grey-black glass bottles. Blue bottles and closures with crown caps are prohibited.

Prosecco is a straw yellow still wine, Prosecco spumante is a sparkling wine and Prosecco frizzante is a dry to semi-dry semi-sparkling wine.
