STORY: The Stellenbosch region is only about 45 km east of Cape Town and got its name from its centre, the university town of Stellenbosch. It is a very old wine-growing region and has always been famous for its red wines. The mountain ranges surrounding the city provide a backdrop to the picturesque vine-covered hills. The different soils in the valleys and on the slopes offer the top wineries located here a range of different wine styles.

AGEING: A part is fermented in French barriques and then added to the remaining amount, aged in steel tanks, in a targeted and harmonious manner.

AROMA: The scent of tropical fruits bewitches the senses. Melons and citrus aromas unfold on the palate with a hint of hazelnut and vanilla. Long melt in the finish.
RATING: The wine gets a great combination of tropical fruits, complexity and freshness through its aging. Full-bodied on the palate, fine juice, beautiful fruit, delicately spicy, salty minerality, rich in finesse, elegant, finely glazed, invigorating and very long-lasting.
SERVING RECOMMENDATION: Pasta with spinach and scampi, light dishes, Königsberger Klopse

Stretching across the southern foothills of the impressive Simonsberg near Stellenbosch, Muratie Winery is one of South Africa's oldest wineries. At the end of the 17th century, Lourens Campher and his black wife Ansela bought the farm, then called De Driesprong, and planted the first vines. A century later, the vineyard passed into the hands of the Melck family, the ancestors of the current owners. In 1907 the German-born artist and bon vivant Georg Paul Canitz moved to Muratie with his family and cultivated the vineyards with the help of his friend Professor Abraham Perold from the University of Stellenbosch. Ronnie Melck, the great personality of the South African wine industry and longtime director of the Stellenbosch Farmer's Winery, was able to buy back the winery from the daughter of the late Canitz in 1988 after a long courtship, thus opening a second Melck era. The tradition and the classic French style plays the decisive role. dr Rijk Melck, who runs the estate for the family, already goes his own way in the vineyard. Quantity and irrigation do not matter, only the quality of the grapes.
