The history of Gavi is inseparable from that of La Scolca estate and the soldi family. Founded in 1919, La Scolca was the first to market a varietal white wine made from the Cortese grape called Gavi, named after the region of the same name. In 1966 Vittorio Soldieri created the now world-famous Gavi dei Gavi 'Etichetta Nera'. La Scolca is thus the oldest and most famous winery in the Gavi region. If Italy were to classify its wine regions like France, the La Scolca zone would be classified as Gavi "Premier Cru". Different grape selection and winemaking methods are used for each wine. Today, the La Scolca winery is managed by the dynamic Dr. Soldi and his daughter Chiara. In addition to considerable expansion work in the historic wine cellar, the high quality standard in particular is checked today using modern means. The numerous wines that are made from the Cortese grape from the sites near Rovereto cover the entire range from simple, fresh and slightly sparkling white wine to traditional products, of which the Etichetta Nera is still at the top.
