Heartland Wines is a joint venture of seven young people who got together in 2001 to turn their love of fine wine into a joint venture. The name of their newly founded winery already expresses how close the project is to them: “Heartland”. As Chief Winemaker at the head of the dedicated team is none other than Ben Glaetzer, scion of the famous Glaetzer family of winemakers. The "wine-o-holic", bursting with self-confidence and determination, not only managed to win over the national trade press, but also to attract the attention of wine pope Robert M. Parker. As Parker describes it, "Ben Glaetzer admirably combines the tremendous fruit and vigor of old vines with a surprising level of elegance and complexity." Langhorne Creek is Australia's oldest cool climate region and is much cooler than neighboring McLaren Vale and Barossa regions for one very simple reason: it is located in an old floodplain on the north shore of Lake Alexandrina. As such it is entirely flat and, unlike the regions on the other side of the Mount Lofty range, is at the mercy of the prevailing winds. The wind blows from the direction of the southern ocean in the early evening and cools the entire region by around 10°C within an hour. This in turn creates cool nights, creating ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. Because the wind has such a profound effect on local viticulture, it is affectionately called the "Lake Doctor" by wine growers. Incidentally, the oldest registered Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the world grow here. This is due to the fortunate fact that there has never been a phylloxera infestation here.
