  • STORY: The Glaetzers are among the oldest wine-growing families in Australia. They arrived in Adelaide on a steamship from Hamburg in 1888 and settled in the fertile Barossa Valley. As Brandenburgers, viticulture was as foreign to them as their new homeland - but it seemed just as promising to them. With courage, energy and plenty of pioneering spirit, they laid the foundation for what is now a legendary family business.

  • VINIFICATION: Due to their liveliness and structure, the grapes from the old Grenache vines (up to 110 years old) benefit less from aging in wood, which is therefore deliberately kept to a minimum. The Shiraz share, on the other hand, is stored for 16 months in old Hogshead oak barrels (80% French, 20% American).

  • AROMA: In the bouquet concentrated fruit aromas of raspberry and plum as well as fine lavender and spice aromas (anise).

  • EVALUATION: On the palate, delicate notes of pepper accompany the full, dark fruit. The finish is pleasantly warm and substantial.

  • SERVING RECOMMENDATION: with grilled and roasted meat and hearty ragouts. The wine should be drunk young, but can be kept for up to five years if stored carefully.

The Glaetzers are among the oldest wine-growing families in Australia. The current head of the family is called Colin Glaetzer and is one of Australia's most famous winemakers. He did an enormous amount for the viticulture of his homeland, but even more for the continued existence of the Glaetzer wine dynasty. Colin's wife Judith was a trained oenologist. So are his three sons. And even two of her wives. After three decades as a winemaker in major Australian wineries, Colin decided in 1995, at the peak of his career, to found his own winery in order to devote himself to the small, the ultimate fine. Super premium wines with a distinctive terroir character in strictly limited quantities are the impressive result. While Colin was still responsible for the first vintages himself, today his son Ben makes the excellent wines. Ben is one of Australia's most talented winemakers, co-founder of Heartland Wines and former co-owner of Mitolo Wines. The best Shiraz wines come from the famous Barossa vineyard, Ebenezer, and are harvested from vines that are up to 130 years old. Yield levels are homeopathic. The aroma concentration in the grapes, on the other hand, is gigantic. With minimal intervention, Ben transforms these fruits into wines that express the great elegance, softness and complexity of the "Glaetzer" brand.
