STORY: When gold was first discovered in California in 1848, thousands upon thousands of settlers and adventurers flocked to California to try their luck there. They write thousands of fateful stories about hard work, courage and success that founded the legend of the land of opportunity. Although the success story of Bob Blue started more than a hundred years later, it still bears witness to the same entrepreneurial spirit.

AGEING: His 1,000 Stories Zinfandel matures for three months in ex-bourbon casks and is less characterized by woody notes than you might think. Rather, he manages to harmoniously interweave the typical roasted and vanilla notes of the bourbon cask with the intense fruit structure of the Zinfandel, giving the wine immense complexity and depth. Maturation in oak casks and subsequent finish over 3 months in ex-bourbon casks.
-
AROMA: Typical roasted and vanilla notes of the bourbon cask harmonize with the intensive fruit structure of the Zinfandel. Aromas of dark cherries, plums and a hint of smoky tobacco, married to a strong yet well-integrated earthiness.
-
RATING: Soft and juicy on the palate with notes of red berries, vanilla and hazelnut. Immense complexity and depth.
-
SERVING RECOMMENDATION: Excellent fireplace wine, but also great with grilled meat, braised meat, lamb, game or hearty pasta dishes.
With the first finds of gold in California in 1848, thousands upon thousands of settlers and adventurers flocked to California to try their luck there. They write thousands of fateful stories about hard work, courage and success that founded the legend of the land of opportunity. Although the success story of Bob Blue started more than a hundred years later, it still bears witness to the same entrepreneurial spirit. Bob joined Californian organic wine pioneer Fetzer in 1988 as a young winemaker. Its groundbreaking "earth-first" philosophy has been setting standards in biodynamic viticulture since 1968. At that time, most Californians did not have access to French barriques, this was only possible for producers like Robert Mondavi. So Bob made a virtue out of necessity and matured his best wines in ex-bourbon casks - as the first producer ever. In the meantime, barriques are no longer so rare and the use of bourbon casks is unusual. So Bob decided to go back to the good old tradition and retell both his story and that of many California winemakers. His 1,000 Stories Zinfandel matures for three months in ex-bourbon casks and is less characterized by oak than one might think. With each batch, the expression of the wine changes and literally tells “1,000 stories”. The wine is also intended to support the Wildlife Conversation Society, which works to preserve bison populations in the United States. Another step in the great sustainability work of Fetzer and Bob Blue, who received the Drinks Business Green Award in 2014 for more than 25 years of commitment to sustainable viticulture.
