The family of the three brothers Bruno, Olivier and Frederic Bererdam has been cultivating wine on the Madonna Hügel in Fleurie since the 16th century. Your winery, named after the summit statue, now covers 28 hectares of vineyards, divided into 90 different plots.
The vineyards for this Beaujolais Village border on the Beaujolais Cru site Brouilly and have a very similar terroir: the soil is barren, rocky and characterized by pink granite, the vines were repeatedly interspersed with very old vines, which gives the wine a perfect balance of finesse and minerality. It is important to the brothers to use the wine-growing techniques handed down by word of mouth from their forefathers – in the vineyard and in the cellar. This is how fine wines are created that reflect the proximity to Burgundy.
Experts see the Burgundian interpretation of Gamay as a real challenge to the big crus and pull out high scores. The New York Times writes: “The Domaine de la Madone proves that the best Beaujolais do not necessarily have to come from crus. You just have to work hard enough for the quality." A drop that is difficult to part with and does not even have to be, because it can withstand a good few years in the cellar.
