STORY: The Vera Cruz Pinotage was named after Spatz's wife Vera, who is tirelessly at his side and has played a key role in Delheim's success. But some also scoff at the fact that the name "Vera Cruz", meaning Vera's cross, is an allusion to the hardship and drudgery she has had to endure since her marriage to Spatz.
AGING: Handpicked in the vineyard. Natural fermentation at low temperatures. The pomace cap is pumped over several times a day. Aging takes place in oak barrels (of which 35% are new barrels) for 16 months.

AROMA: Deep dark color. Aromas of black cherry and mulberry with hints of chocolate.
RATING: Full and juicy on the palate with a nice length and wonderfully round finish.
SERVING RECOMMENDATION: Braised veal cheeks, sauerbraten, game dishes.
The Vera Cruz Pinotage was named after Spatz's wife Vera, who is always at his side and has played a key role in Delheim's success. But some also scoff at the fact that the name "Vera Cruz", meaning Vera's cross, is an allusion to the hardship and drudgery she has had to endure since her marriage to Spatz. The Delheim winery is not only a household name in South Africa, but also in Germany in particular. No wonder, since the owner, 'Spatz' Sperling, originally comes from Tettnang on Lake Constance. He was one of the first to fight for the development of dry wines in the Cape in 1951. Obsessed with the idea of producing red premium wines, he gradually bought additional vineyards because he noticed that only the white wine thrived at higher altitudes with more moisture. His talent as a winemaker and his belief in himself and his new homeland of South Africa gave him the energy to rise to enormous heights and join the ranks of South Africa's best producers. Today the winery is run by his son Victor and his charming daughter Nora. Great value is placed on sustainability and ecology. So they have created their own sewage treatment plant and ensure biodiversity by promoting the cultivation of native grasses and bushes around the vineyards. It goes without saying that they are also committed to helping the colored population who live on the winery. And should you ever want to visit the winery: be sure to visit the fabulous restaurant!
