The Vera Cruz Pinotage was named after Spatz's wife Vera, who is always at his side and has played a key role in Delheim's success. But some also scoff at the fact that the name "Vera Cruz", meaning Vera's cross, is an allusion to the hardship and drudgery she has had to endure since her marriage to Spatz. The Delheim winery is not only a household name in South Africa, but also in Germany in particular. No wonder, since the owner, 'Spatz' Sperling, originally comes from Tettnang on Lake Constance. He was one of the first to fight for the development of dry wines in the Cape in 1951.
