In the 1950s, in line with agricultural development programs, a large area that had been used for grazing was released for vine cultivation. After families settled in open spaces, the best crops for the soil and climate were determined. The outstanding suitability of this picturesque landscape between the Gulf of Alghero and the Bay of Porto Conte for quality wine-growing soon became evident. In the first few years, an appealing quality could be produced, which was not only popular on the local market, but on the entire island. The success motivated the winegrowers to found their own winery cooperative in the heart of the cultivation area in the village of Santa Maria la Palma, which also gave the winery its name. The Cantina Santa Maria La Palma has around 350 members and exports its wines to a variety of countries.
