· STORY: In 1824 the German physician Dr. Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegbert in the city of Angostura (today Ciudad Bolívar) in Venezuela developed an effective high-proof tonic for tropical stomach and intestinal diseases, which was taken primarily by sailors and merchants and distributed worldwide. Today, the Angostura Bitters, made according to a secret recipe, are above all delicious flavorings for a variety of foods and drinks.
· AROMA: Aromatic, slightly ethereal notes of herbs and exotic spices (cloves, bitter orange, cinnamon, cardamom, gentian root, cinchona).
· ASSESSMENT: As an aromatic, it gives food and drinks (depending on the dosage more or less) subtle hints of the herbal aromas already sniffed and the characteristic bitter note.
· SERVING RECOMMENDATION: Suitable for refining desserts, pastries, sauces, fish and meat or at the bar, as a refined ingredient in numerous cocktails such as the classic Manhattan or in gin and vodka-based drinks.
Angostura is one of the leading rum producers in the Caribbean with an excellent selection of various rums and other spirits. Many products from the Trinidad-based company, which exports to over 150 countries, have existed for generations. Angostura also produces the world-famous Angostura Bitter named after it.
After its development in the early 19th century, Angostura Bitter was awarded gold medals at 12 world exhibitions and introduced to all European royal courts. However, it did not become famous as a medicine, but as a condiment and for coordinating cocktails.
