When Elio's father Giuseppe died in 1983 at the age of 92, Elio was faced with the question of whether to continue his career in a tournament bank, which had made him bank manager after all, or to return to the family winery in Monforte d'Alba, where he spent his childhood. He decided against the cancellation and the hustle and bustle of the pulsating metropolis and for the 13 hectares of the finest Nebbiolo vineyards, which are not only among the most beautiful, but also among the best in Piedmont. Elio had looked over his father's shoulder from time to time, but he wasn't an accomplished winemaker. So he set out to find out everything that was needed to fulfill his big dream: to one day be called in the same breath as the Gajas, Giacosas and Conternos. He renovated the winery and brought the vineyards into shape with painstaking detail work. He learned his lessons from year to year and consistently made adjustments wherever he felt he was still lagging behind. Today he is where he wanted to be. At the top! His Baroli are among the best that Piedmont has to offer.
