Port wine is a red, occasionally white, sweet wine from Portugal, more precisely from the Alto Douro region. It is enjoyed both as an aperitif and as a dessert wine. Traditionally, after fermentation, port wine was transported across the Douro River towards the sea to the port city of Porto for aging and storage, and from here it was also shipped all over the world. Hence the Portuguese name Vinho do Porto.
