Cider or cider is fermented apple juice. The ancient Romans and Greeks already knew wine made from apples and pears. The Romans used cider as a substitute for real wine. At the beginning of the 18th century, apple wine was considered the wine of the poor in the Frankfurt area. Today, the Hessian apple wine culture with its Äbbelwoi or Ebbelwoi is part of the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage.

All types of apples can be used to make cider. The taste and appearance depend on the variety and composition. In France apple wine is drunk as cider and in England as cider.
